When the great pyramids were being built there was still woolly mammoths walking the earth.
Pigs can’t look directly upwards. Neither can we, when standing on all fours. This is because ours and pigs necks are constructed in the same way.
And according to some weirdos on the internet who apparently know some concerning things from experience, human meat tastes the same as pig meat. Tastes like Pork. But now I’m curious why pork & ham & bacon are three distinctly different tastes & textures if they all come from pig.
There are more atoms of hydrogen in a molecule of water than there are stars in the whole solar system.
So, more than the 1 star in our solar system? Did you type that right?
Correct. I essentially said 2 is bigger than 1.
Ha! Good one, I only caught half of that joke.
You can double an hourly rate to approximate the annual wage. $30/hr ~= $60k / year.
Because 50 paid weeks * 40 paid hours = 2000 hours -> 2k
$30 * 2k = $60k
Sure, for people who work 40 hours a week, 50 weeks a year. Ugh that sounds exhausting.
My second favorite thing about this fact is it reliably brings out the troglodytes to gripe about the differences between different companies/countries/privileged life/careers.
While completely and utterly missing the point - that this works as a rapid estimate to roughly convert between hourly & salaried. It does not pretend to be accurate for all cases. It’s just a quick estimate that works for most people working full time positions. It’s meant for conversational use, not filing taxes.
Humans can’t feel wet, what we’re actually feeling is cold. It’s why when you have a cold patch on a blanket or carpet you can’t quite figure out if it’s wet or not.
It’s actually an even greater level of abstraction: we feel the rate of heat flow through our skin. This is (kind-of) why plastic feels warmer than metal. Colder things don’t feel colder because they are colder. Colder things feel colder because they more efficiently sap heat from our skin. Wet things feel colder because water and other highly conductive fluids which have wet the skin (and are thus in direct contact with it) are much more efficient in removing heat, thus feeling colder. This is the twofold reason why oil doesn’t feel as cold as water: it has significantly worse heat conductivity, and it doesn’t readily evaporate (as evaporation is a highly endothermic process, sapping heat even more efficiently than a conductive liquid on its own.)
Sorry these facts are actually useful, please leave. ;)
Oh yeah? Well menthol tricks your nerves into thinking they’re losing more heat than they are, so if you dissolve a tiny crystal of menthol in everclear, you can make a tincture to rub on a part of your body that’s sweating, and it will feel naturally cool for about ten minutes, reducing discomfort from both heat and sweat! How’s that for “actually useful”?
This is so cool to know!!! Thank you!
I feel like that’s like “you can’t see or touch the world or experience time, your eyeballs and molecules that never touch anything are just affected by magnetic and gravitational waves and translate that to feeling and experiencing those things”
Like I guess it’s technically true in that perspective, but effectively false
Somewhere bongos started to play…
Is that a Jumanji reference?
Everyone knows you jump in the pool in summer, smell the chlorine, and know the water is clean, right?
Fun fact- chlorine dissolved in pool water at the usual sanitation levels has almost no perceptible smell or taste.
HOWEVER, when chlorine binds with certain organic substances, especially ammonia (from the urea in sweat and urine), the result is chloramine which has a significant chlorine-y smell. Chloramine has essentially no disinfecting properties. So when you go to the public pool and get a whiff of chlorine and think ‘man they’re using a lot of chlorine today’, no, it probably means someone peed in the pool.
You’re welcome :)
Ok, but why then when you open a bottle of bleach or container of chlorine pellets, does it smell like chlorine. Do they add the piss ahead of time?
take all but 1.5mL out of that gallon jug of household bleach, then fill it back up with water. that’s roughly the concentration of chlorine in a swimming pool.
That’s pure chlorine, much higher concentration. At the concentrations of pool chlorination there’s essentially no smell.
But couldn’t they just be over-coordinating. That’s what it feels like.
Either way, I’m glad they came up with salt water systems. Much nicer.
Overchlorination doesn’t lead to the smell, but it can dry out your skin.
Where I live, free chlorine concentrations up to 10.0 ppm are legal, but pools are normally set closer to 2.5 or 3 ppm. Even at 10, you can’t smell a chlorine smell, but my skin won’t feel great after.
However, chloramine concentrations as low as 0.2 ppm can give a chlorine smell.
One of the ways to get rid of chloramines is adding a lot more free chlorine, enough to break down the chloramines.
Fun fact, salt water systems require a gadget called a salt cell which converts some of the salt in the water into chlorine. The salt isn’t actually sanitizing the water, it’s not there in nearly enough concentration to do that. Rather, the salt cell is splitting the sodium chloride into sodium and chlorine, the chlorine is then sanitizing the pool.
Try swimming in bleach and see how it compares
There is no thru line from mouth to urethra. You drink water, it gets absorbed into your blood, your urinary system filters excess water and waste, you pee it out. Your pee is filtered blood, the only thru line for water to take from your mouth is your ass. I understood that when it was taught, but I didn’t really think about it…
Tell that to my body. Fluid goes in, fluid comes out. Explain that.
Piss comes from blood!
So does breast milk
Wow, of course you are correct, I never even thought about that.
Does the blood god accept pee? Your move, “science”!
Giant isopods have a life expectancy of 6-9 years, but one of them in an aquarium went on a hunger strike for 5 years.
The Moon is 384,400 km away from Earth. If you took every elephant on Earth and stacked them one atop another most of them would die.
If you took a horse’s large intestine and stretched it out end-to-end, the horse would not survive.
If you laid every road on earth end-to-end a lot of people would be annoyed with you

jokes aside, the vastness of space is incomprehensible https://www.joshworth.com/dev/pixelspace/pixelspace_solarsystem.html
“Space,” it says, “is big. Really big. You just won’t believe how vastly hugely mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it’s a long way down the road to the chemist, but that’s just peanuts to space. Listen…” and so on.
To be fair though, when confronted by the sheer enormity of the distances between the stars, better minds than the one responsible for the Guide’s introduction have faltered. Some invite you to consider for a moment a peanut in Reading and a small walnut in Johannesburg, and other such dizzying concepts.

Thankyou! I’ve seen that before, but lost the link. It’s mind-boggling.
I love this demo.
Hey, is that fairy cake?
I have one related, the diameter of the moon is smaller than Australia.
Did you know that if you took a blue whale, the largest mammal on earth, and laid it end to end, tail to mouth, on a basketball court, the game would be cancelled?
The moon causes tides, but mooning does not involve tiddies
If every human held hand in a straight line around the earth a lot of them would drown
The last people on land just have to be a wee bit stronger to keep the tension, then it works out fine.
There are more hydrogen atoms in a single molecule of water than there are stars in the entire solar system
You would guess this is useless info, but I can use this fun fact to remember how many suns the earth has also.
🤦♂️
Every sixty seconds in Africa, a minute passes
I’m going to go out on a limb and say all of them would die for one reason or another.
Also, my first experience with the internet back in 1994 was a page of elephant jokes, I feel I’ve come full circle now.
Why full circle, though? Is this your last experience with the internet? RIP aeronmelon’s internet experience, 1994-2026
Let’s be honest, it’s been downhill since the Elephant Jokes website.
It’s hard to imagine any of them would live. I guess one near the top might survive by using the flood of elephant pieces to slow their fall. But an elephant can’t survive a ~10 foot fall. That’s about 2 elephants tall, and the bottom two or the ones I am most confident are dying in this.
Wouldn’t you say that they’ll all die? Some from lack of air and some from the weight of a gazillion other elephants on top of them
With vanishingly rare exception, addicts choose the mood altering substance that is closest to what the medically accepted treatment for their underlying disorder(s) would be.
People who are addicted to alcohol, without exception, have an underlying anxiety disorder.
People with ADHD and similar brain functioning tend to choose amphetamines.
The list goes on and it gets very complicated, because most mood altering substances have multiple effects, and most people have a blend of underlying issues. But the point is, there is a very noteworthy observation there, I feel.
I feel qualified to say this as myself I am 11 years sober and have worked in the field of addiction for 8 years and I’m formally educated.
But I liked all of the drugs.
That means you have all of the problems!
Call me Ash, because I gotta catch 'em all!
I have ADHD and I trend to get into a comfortabele alcohol Buzz every evening because it shows down the train of emotions. Amphetamines don’t really feel good, nor do other drugs. I hate speed and weed.
People who are addicted to alcohol, without exception, have an underlying anxiety disorder.

I feel attacked…
Lol yeah its called self medicating
OK but you basically just did the mood axis what do the THC, opiate, dissociative anesthetic, and hallucinogenic users have?
That sounds like someone who just wants the pain to go away
And I know psychedelics were good for my trauma
A good fucking time.
I need answers NOW!
Is this related to the cravings for certain food?
No
The Mission Impossible theme, you know, the “Dun! Dun! DADA! Dun! Dun! Duhduh!” one, written in 5/4 time? That’s supposed to spell MI for Mission: Impossible, in Morse code.
--..dash dash dot dot, MI. The first two notes are dotted quarter notes, 1.5 beats each for a total of 3 beats, then two quarter notes for each dot, total of 2 beats, grand total of 5 beats per measure. 5/4 time.FIND A PRACTICAL USE FOR THAT SHIT.
Hey! Same for Rush’s YYZ. The morse code for Y-Y-Z (the airport code for the Toronto airport where the band no doubt spent a lot of time) is
--.- --.- --..which is a rhythmic motif that appears a bunch in the song in some ungodly meter I don’t care to look up right now.So, I don’t know if it did it on your end, the reason why I put my morse code in a code block is it expanded the two dots into three. Don’t know if it does it on all UIs but on my end it made your Z into dash dash dot dot dot.
He says, as if it matters.
It does matter! And I noticed shortly after I posted it, was mildly annoyed, and didn’t bother to fix it.
Edit: until now
Practical use? None I can think of. But I love learning this. Thank you.
It may not have that much of ause, but that’s exactly why we consider Music to be Art.
Ok that’s pretty genius.
When Mount Vesuvius erupted, the heat of it turned a man’s brain to glass.
Glass is made of silica. So, nah.
According to the International Commission on Glass, silica is one material that can be used to make glass, but not the only material:
The continents move at roughly the same speed that your fingernails grow.
That’s fast! They must take their supplements!
Ketchup, or catsup, which is the same word latinized differently, was a fish sauce from China.
The western Europeans and American colonists used the recipe, and expanded it to things like mushrooms and many other ingredients. (for proof, look at the ketchup entry on wikipedia).
Tomato ketchup (which is specified on your bottle still today) wasn’t invented until we realized that tomatoes weren’t poisonous despite their color, and their sweetness and tang totally rocked with the ketchup recipe.
Now we use it to eat frenched fries, which aren’t French! In fact, they are Belgian, and are named because they used a cooking technique invented by the French called “frenching” which has evolved into deep frying.
So, you are dipping your belgian potatoes into a chinese sauce that use a North American fruit as a base.
And with this information, you shall father nations!
And in the Philipines, ketchup refers to a banana ketchup, not a tomato ketchup.
That picture of mushroom ketchup is vile.
I bet that would be bomb on roast beef tho
Thank you. This sounds like the kind of useless knowledge I can use.
It also took a long time for tomato ketchup sales to take off because it was very difficult to make shelf stable for transporting and selling in stores. Heinz was the first company to make one that sold well. Before that, tomato ketchup was typically made at home if you wanted something vaguely decent.
If sound could travel through space, from the distance we are to it, the sun would be as loud as a jackhammer everywhere on the planet, all the time.
Are we assuming sound is traveling through space as if it were air?
If it were like sound through water it would be even louder.
human brains use bang-bang control to control our body movement. all muscles are either on or off, with many individually actuateable groups of fibers per major muscle group. if youve ever lifted weights and started to shake on a hard lift, thats your body switching rapidly between different muscle fibers trying to complete the lift. body feedback takes more than 100 ms, which is way too long to do active feedback control on a lot of the really fast actions we do with our bodies, so for those our brain just does it open loop. it generates a sequence based on your intent and past training and just lets it rip, but we for sure can modify the sequence midway.
this is part of why humanoid robots look so uncanny when they move, they do continuous control which is fundamentally different from how we move our bodies. our brains have special pathways that process others body movements and what those robots do doesnt line up with how we know our bodies move so it looks wrong.
We should pass a funny law that requires all humanoid robots to grunt as they move.
You’ve never been close to one of those clankers, huh? The constant whining of every servo motor is like a bunch of small, high pitched groans in tandem.
Along these lines: a major league baseball batter must predict where the ball will be before it leaves the pitcher’s hand. There is literally not enough time for the neural signal to get from the eyes to the brain, be processed and then an impulse sent to the arm muscles to swing the bat in the time it takes for the ball to travel to home plate at 95mph.
I’ve really enjoyed this fact, thank you!!
Muscles can be either voluntary (choosing to lift a chair) or involuntary (a beating heart) as well.
