  • I like the idea of Death in the Discworld. You get what you believe in. That’s why some isolated tribes kill evangelist on site , hell only exists if you believe in it.

The monk that believes in reincarnation is always so excited to start again but wishes he would remember more, only remembering his other lives in the time he is dead.

The long desert that Brutha believes in is special when he decides to save Vorbis, and walks it together, even though he is like a messiah and Vorbis should be condemned to suffer his loneliness forever.

I fucking love The Small Gods book so much

  • i have had similar arguments, in the US. I welcome immigration. One of my grandfathers was famous for fighting the western expansion and our tribe is famous for being the only people to make the US Army sign a declaration of defeat but the killings of people on the Oregon trail was our failure. People with purpose will always move and fighting it is welcoming disaster. finding ways to coexist is what we should be focusing on. Trying to relieve suffering is what should be our end goal.

so when people tell me or other native Americans, we should go back to my country. We can’t, it’s gone. the rez isn’t a country. it’s a small safety net to hold off the erasure of our culture. there’s just the US now and we have to make it more welcoming for those that need to find a place.

only death and suffering will come from closed borders and isolation. stagnant culture and ignorance. hatred of the outsiders. it’s just a losing battle and the Lakota won their fight but they lost the battle because they didn’t understand the numbers of people who were willing to brave the risks of immigration

  • I worked at Microsoft in the early 2000 era. before Xbox. I did the top level os consumer support stuff. not for corporate but for the general public that uses the os support channel. one day I was in a discussion group and we talked about what you think about the future kinda thing. it was supposed to be a relaxed discussion but once I brought up Linux and older hardware, I felt the temperature changed. it was later explained that I was black listed for my argument because it expressed that flaws in Windows and the potential of Linux. Years later I joked with a friend who still had an MS job, that putting the Linux subsystem in Windows was admitting I was right back then… this new Xbox coming out in competition to the steam system just makes me feel so justified. Microsoft will always be a second best because they can’t break the internal mindset that they are the top

  • With my arch experience, there has been a few big deal manual interventions but nothing that has bricked my install. At the worst, you boot to a terminal so you can fix it.

It usually goes like this for me:

update, oh bother… probably time to reboot

    BAM

    OMG WTF

    open www.archlinux.org on my phone

    oh geez, ok…

    tinker tinker reboot

    its back to normal! w0ot

I will say that I have had to learn that I need to pay attention when a new kernel is released, because I somehow get it before the video driver is also updated, it will be broken after reboot
