The sequel was a bit meh, but required reading I’d say

Steam Hardware@sopuli.xyz•Valve Says It's 'Hard at Work' on Steam Deck 2, but There's Still No Release Window
1·3 days agoI’m not OP. But I think I share his sentiment.
You obviously know a lot about this stuff, I do not.
I’m excited for FEX, because even though some games can technically be played on arm right now, and even though you say it’s easy to convert (I have no idea), the fact is nobody is doing it 🤷♂️
I understand Valve did a lot of work to make gaming not only possible on Linux, but in some cases preferable.
From a layman’s non-software-developer perspective, regardless of how much actual effort is required by Valve… I hope that FEX will shift the industry as aggressively as proton did. I hope that gaming on arm becomes no big deal, easy to do with a click, and preferable in some cases. Whereas right now, it’s not that easy or performant, as I understand.
So I guess… I’m just excited, that’s all 🤷♂️

Linux@lemmy.ml•Framework announced the Framework 13 Pro with full Linux compatibility from the Start
2·9 days agoI looked into it, but I didn’t want to mess with rpmostree anymore than I need to, since I’m on bluefin. I’m really digging the forced stability.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Framework announced the Framework 13 Pro with full Linux compatibility from the Start
6·9 days agoThis, so much this. I also run Fedora.
I can’t just close the lid and put it in my bag without worrying.
Honestly, most times of I’m not actively working on something, I just shut it off completely before packing it away. It starts plenty fast, and at least I know I’ll actually have battery when I need it. Instead of finding it dead or at 10%. So annoying.

8·9 days agoYou shouldn’t buy based on promises or assumptions. But if I had to guess, I’d say an OLED panel may come eventually. And it would likely be backwards compatible.
Original FW13 owners already had the original glossy panel, then the new matte higher resolution panel came out as a drop in replacement, and now this new touch panel is also a drop in replacement.
I already have a FW13 with the matte high res panel, I won’t be going to touch panel. But maybe if they do an OLED I’d jump to it.
My plan is not to upgrade unless I need to. If something breaks, it’ll get the newest version of whatever that thing is.
Unless I feel hampered by my 7040u in 3 or 4 years, then maybe I’ll do something about it? But I really don’t need that much horsepower in my life.
I’m just glad I have the option. And happy to support a company giving me the option.

6·11 days agoAny suggestions for someone tech savvy enough to run a proxmox server for a handful of services, to get started with home assistant?
Can you replicate something like a Google home with voice commands?
I may or may not be getting a new house soon. I’m good with electrical to replace switches with wireless ones. But what do you get? Where do you start and where do you end? What about the WAF?
I saw LTT did smart switches in his house and it was a mess of incompatibilities.
Any good resources? I don’t even know what I don’t know haha

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is a small thing you did that changed your life in a big way?
9·11 days agoOh I’m definitely in the slow category, according to the cars behind me.
Don’t get me wrong, I do the speed limit, and heck still sometimes the appropriate “5 over” if there’s cars behind me.
But that’s not enough for most people, they race around me anyway.
But more than just not speeding up when I see the red light, I watch the light from farther away. It’s very flat here, and if you pay attention you can see the light turning from 10 or 20 seconds away, and adjust appropriately. You can even time the light to know it’ll turn red before you get there.
I’m not counting seconds or anything, it’s more of a vibe check. “That light has been green a looong time, it’s definitely turning red before I get there.”
So depending on who’s behind me and ahead of me and how far away I am, I’ll either start coasting down to maybe 5 or 10 under as I approach, that way I can use my brakes even less.
I get pretty good at it with the lights on my way to work. But some lights are un-timable. Their timing is almost purposely designed to waste gas.
And one stretch of lights changes depending on time of day to create a unidirectional flow of traffic. You’ll hit every green going south at 3pm, but every red going north. Stuff like that.
Using brakes is wasted gas, lost efficiency. I get a whole 5 or 6 more mpg driving my wife’s car, than when she drives it. Maybe more. Every time I drive it I watch the average tick up. For her it hovers around 25/26. I’ve seen over 31 in the same car.
Again I’m not the guy who painfully slowly accelerates, angering everyone. I know how to stand on the pedal when I need to. I just pay attention, and accelerate and brake maybe a little more smoothly.
I’mma be honest, I started your video, skipped ahead 10 seconds, watched for a few seconds, then skipped ahead another 10 or 20 seconds, and watched a few seconds, before deciding that it was entirely different.
That’s on me. Yes it’s the same video, it starts at 55 seconds in your video
It is not the same video

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you shower facing the shower or away from it?
2·18 days agoWhy not hair first? I always do hair first, top to bottom.
I do hair, face, then conditioner in hair and let it set while I scrub the rest. Then rinse top down.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you shower facing the shower or away from it?
1·18 days agoI don’t care for those, not enough pressure for me to effectively wash away soap.
I start by rotating for even heating. Soap my hair facing away, rinse it facing. Wash face facing. Conditioner hair away. Step completely out of the water to quickly scrub neck to feet with soapy loofa. Facing to rinse hair/face. The rotating and rinsing top to bottom.
Done. In and out in 5-10 minutes depending on how dirty I was, and therefore how hard I had to scrub.
I used to use a valve on the head itself to turn off the water completely during scrubbing, but I didn’t get a new one when I moved so I got out of the habit.
I should buy one again. Saves water, costs less.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•For those of you with a living room or multiple rooms; do you have a TV in your bedroom? Why or why not?
3·25 days agoHad one in the room growing up. Had one when I moved out. Took it out when I got married, and haven’t had one for well over a decade.
One in the living room though. Bought it when we got married. Stupid thing won’t die so I can justify replacing it.

Front right: cell phone, knife.
Back left: any small trash I’ve collected throughout the day.
Back right: usually empty 🤷♂️
I don’t like sitting on things. Kept my wallet in my back right until I was 25 or 30, started hurting my back. Since switching it forward, no issues.
