31·4 days agoYeah, it’s an impressively poor article.
Public bidding/contracts are notorious for all sorts of shenanigans. Many governments have faces this problem. Insisting we get that sorted perfectly, a problem no government in the world seems to have tackled, before bracing ourselves islile refusing to wear a helmet until they make on that stops cars from hitting you.

19·5 days agoFinally said yes when a coworker kept asking if I’d like to sub on her co-ed low level team.
A dozen years later, I’m in better shape than ever, have made a whole bunch of great new friends from all walks of life and really look forward to most days. (I’m a glutton, so I play 3 times a week, so by definition almost half my nights are amazing.)

CanadaPolitics@lemmy.ca•Here's why I think Parliament chose to fund the NDP despite no official status...English
11·8 days agoConservatives know the only chance they have for power is the NDP siphoning off enough votes from the Liberals.
Liberals designed that the agreement so that funding is based on the party at the time of election so as to encourage more floor crossing.

122·9 days agoLots of countries want to pivot closer to the EU as a hedge against a mercurial America or authoritarian China…
I’m definitely a fan of closer ties though I’d be a little wary about fully joining an organization where decisions can be held up by a recalcitrant Orban or Le Pen.

Science Fiction@lemmy.world•Any good aspirational post-apocalyptic fiction about rebuilding society?English
8·10 days agoNot what you’re asking for but there’s a great nonfiction book called the Knowledge which is about how to rebuild after a collapse. (Mostly from a technical perspective etc but still, really interesting stuff!)
Well, at least I can stop buying condoms soon!
That actually seems an improvement.
I was reading about food through the ages and back in the day, there were recipe steps like “rotate until two boys are wearied.”

12·10 days ago14% of the NDP party members have crossed the floor, should people on the other side, centre right who voted Liberal be concerned they are also “literally voting for the NDP and/or a party which was attractive to the NDP”?

3·11 days agoI’m going to regret this when not high, but I’d be happy to maintain a list if someone can suggest a service with which to do so that isn’t youtube.
(Fine, maybe if we have to via youtube but I have to think one of you groovy folks know of something better.)

Canada@lemmy.ca•Analysis: Mark Carney enters his majority eraEnglish
7·11 days agoOh, I fully agree about wanting a competent, reasonable Opposition. But this Opposition doesn’t strike me entirely as such, regardless of the leader. I’d much prefer a better Opposition but I’m happy this Opposition self sabotaged by choosing to be led by a man who utterly repels such a large swathe of the electorate.

22·11 days agoThere’s a universe in which a Conservative leader with an ounce of charisma was in charge 2 years ago and is now cosying up to trump.
Thank heavens Poilievre sucks so much.

La Haine is a critically regarded masterpiece and usually lands in best movies of all time lists. Easily one of the best French movies ever.
It’s really worth a watch.
