Regulating it won’t stop the government from misusing it or reduce climate change. In fact, banning smaller models would probably make climate change worse. Everyone will have to go through government approved chatbots.

The epstein class knows that climate change will take down civilization (and by extension capitalism). They are hoping to develop AGI wich will find a solution for them.
The accelerationist far right wants the collapse of civilization, so they can rise up from the ashes and form ethno-states.

America always finds a bogy man to justify these actions - Communism for foreign Interventionism and nuclear build up, Terrorism for violation of domestic rights and more interventionism, etc. Now China for reckless unregulated capitalism to “win” the super power race. Not surprisingly it was reckless unregulated capitalism that gave China the ability to become our competition to begin with. They sell the public over and over with these devoid of nuance narratives about the big bad other.
This time, we do have a big bad bogeyman. It’s the tech bro billionaires that have overdosed on their own blu kool-aid.
Chris is a dear friend of mine of 25+ years (Jesus, time flies). I know Lemmy has a deep hatred of CEOs but Chris is a genuine good guy. He left his CEO job in order to fight the unchecked expansion of AI. The conversations he alluded to in this op-ed include one I participated in. In fact, the bulk of the article is a rework of our conversation. Not every tech executive has a hard on for AI.

We also know China is not close to catching up. Chinese companies own only an estimated 5 percent of the world’s AI computing capacity — a fraction of what U.S. firms control. Much of Chinese AI firm innovation has come from “distillation” of more powerful U.S. models, meaning they advance primarily at the pace of U.S. companies. If we slow down, they are likely to slow down.
This is super relevant and TIL, the whole not slowing down because China will surpass or catch up is a massive red herring, if this is true.
Fuck all the oligarchs and techbros. None of this is good news for humanity.
The real danger is a dystopian state where AI captures half of all jobs while regulations create a soft monopoly for three companies. They will charge prices low enough to replace you but high enough that you can’t turn around and use it to compete against your old boss.
Or they will only sell you if you buy six figures worth at the same time in bulk
capitalism.
