That’s because it was. They did copyright infringement on an industrial scale and didn’t compensate anyone. Think what you may about copyright but that’s still the work of so many people they just stole.
If an individual got caught doing and saying a fraction of what Microsoft did and said, they’d by in jail for a long time. But apparently corporations can say whatever they’d like, out of the assumption that it’ll make investors happy.
And not just Microsoft. This applies to all of the big tech names training AI models. Not to mention the destruction of a few rare books (I kinda forgive the paper itself, but some copies are just rare and they don’t seem to care).

Microsoft gains more from losing the lawsuits than winning them. Adding a price tag won’t make it go away, it just creates a soft monopoly
