MEPs Push for New Centre to Counter Foreign Interference

A European Parliament special committee has adopted proposals for a new EU centre and binding tools to counter foreign interference, disinformation and hybrid threats, with Russia named as the primary source.

Russia [has been identified] as the primary threat to Europe’s democratic integrity, citing frequent hybrid attacks on critical infrastructure including cyberattacks, physical sabotage, arson, espionage and signal jamming, with related activity also originating from Belarus, China, Iran and North Korea.

MEPs are calling for relevant EU agencies to be given greater capacity to act against hybrid activities and sabotage, potentially by adding hybrid threats to Europol’s mandate, alongside expanded sanctions targeting enablers of Russian disinformation and non-EU entities, particularly Chinese ones, that help circumvent sanctions and facilitate Russian operations.

The committee also wants a coordinated EU response to Russia’s blacklisting of EU citizens, journalists and MEPs.

The committee says it is urgent for the EU to reduce its dependence on foreign-controlled technology in critical sectors, particularly on US technology companies and Chinese hardware, including through a “buy European” strategy for critical infrastructure investment and diversification toward more reliable suppliers of critical raw materials. The report stresses enforcing existing digital rules on platforms rather than introducing new legislation, as well as defending the EU’s right to govern its own market.

      Never was a good guy. What America is transitioning from is their role as leader of the West, but Trump’s America is only somewhat more evil than baseline America.

        There was that time they helped defeat the Nazis. And they’re the only reason modern day China exists, instead of being part of some Japanese Empire.

          Which was happening at the same time they were firebombing Tokyo and putting Japanese-Americans in camps and only a few years before they’d flatten Korea. Also while America (and the allies more broadly) certainly helped Japan’s attempt to take over China seems to have been more or less doomed from the start.

            I don’t have a problem with firebombing nazis. And they didn’t flatten Korea, they fought the Kim dynasty. The ones that brought North Korea to the brink of starvation.

            The only reason there’s a modern day “Communist” China is because they were quite happy to stand back and let the Americans and the Republicans fight and die to defend their land.

              We should all have a problem with terror bombing and related war crimes. From Wikipedia:

              The strikes conducted by the USAAF on the night of 9–10 March 1945, codenamed Operation Meetinghouse, constitute the single deadliest and most destructive aerial bombing raid in human history.[1] Sixteen square miles (41 km2; 10,000 acres) of central Tokyo was destroyed, leaving an estimated 100,000 civilians dead and over one million homeless.

              If you don’t have a problem with this, you’re barely better than Nazis.

              And they didn’t flatten Korea,

              Blatantly false. Again from Wikipedia:

              After an abortive Chinese spring offensive, UN forces retook territory roughly up to the 38th parallel. Armistice negotiations began in July 1951, but dragged on as the fighting became a war of attrition and the North suffered devastating damage from UN bombing, destroying virtually all of North Korea’s major cities.

              The only reason there’s a modern day “Communist” China is because they were quite happy to stand back and let the Americans and the Republicans fight and die to defend their land.

              Irrelevant but also wrong. The Communists fought a successful guerilla campaign against the Japanese. The Republicans fought most of the pitched battles because they were the ones with a conventional army, but the Communists were far from idle. Also from Wikipedia:

              The Japanese were unable to defeat CCP forces in Shaanxi, who waged a campaign of sabotage and guerrilla warfare. In November 1939, Nationalist forces launched a large scale winter offensive, and in August 1940, CCP forces launched the Hundred Regiments Offensive in central China. In retaliation, Japanese forces implemented massive scorched earth policies in North and Central China, killing millions of civilians.

              IMO you should question wherever you got that information from given that so much of it is wrong.
