Legit switched to Linux because of Win11. It’s been a hell of a learning curve too, but I’m doing it specifically to spite windows.
Honestly 99% of my complaint on Linux is package management. The .deb/Ubuntu approach of “downloadable installers must micro-target specific semi-annual releases” is absolutely bananas when Windows can install software from the 1900s. Otherwise? I mean I have a lot of micro-complaints but that’s the 500 lb gorilla in the room. Still happy to be done with Windows though.
Downloading .deb from internet directly is a recipe for breakage on update. Appimages are analogous to .exe in windowsland. Proprietary vendors not being up to speed with Linux distro landscape is a very real issue
Right, that’s my whole point. “Installing software” should not be such a minefield where basically unless the package version you need is in Discover or whatever, you have to learn about the dozen+ different ways an application can be packaged and the various footguns of each.
edit: I want to install a service and it’s not on Discover. Do I want the package source? The flatpak? The snap? The appimage? The .deb? The .rpm? The docker image? The podman image? Build from source from GitHub? Or the .tar.gz? Or they just published a shell script and said “just run this as root”.
And for each of the above, which one do I want? Especially if you’re not on a mainstream distro so if it says “oh use this if you’re on Ubuntu 26.04” and you have to confirm “okay, under the hood my Mint distro uses Ubuntu 24.10 as its package source”.

this, ffs what’s wrong with flatpack and click with a mouse. I want to use apps, im not there 'mirrin the OS and my kb skills, tap up 30 times in terminal. Hell I even havee a txt file to copy paste some commamds into Terminal

Why would you use downloadable installers?
Because… that’s how the software I’m trying to install was published? I mean I’d rather they were in the ubuntu repos but they aren’t.
Well that’s the publisher’s fault then. They decided to publish it the way it wouldn’t work with future distros. There was no real reason for them to do it that way.
Unfortunately need Windows for work, but was able to switch my HTPC server to Linux and have been very happy. Still a lot to learn!
I started by making my old W10PC dual boot, and now I boot windows weekly at most, and just virtual box windows for a few work apps daily.
Everything Microsoft is fucked.
They worked so hard to cram every feature and make everything one fucking platform and the bugs just kept piling up.
I don’t need to fucking access my files through Teams. I don’t fucking want OneDrive to be a requirement for auto save. I fucking hate Copilot.
I just fucking want Excel to work.
You charge a subscription fee now. Where the fuck is that money going because it clearly is not going into product development and support.

The funniest thing happened at my work this year.
One night our computers all decided to update without our consent as windows does. Everyone’s computer crashed and the updates and how they broke each system varied wildly.
My laptop got totally bricked. I mean I used windows recovery USB, a damn actual disk, tried every safe mode, bios, windows repair utility thing I could. Nothing.
I reinstalled Windows 11 completely. To my utter fuckong bewilderment it was STILL BROKEN. Could not get to the sign in menu even though I could reinstall the OS. I’d seriously never seen anything like this shit and I’ve been building PCs for 2 decades.
So I said fuck it, loaded Linux mint on to the laptop and just like that, I could get to a desktop again.
The really shocking part, everyone at my work used all the computers, so if someone was near my laptop and needed to get something done, they’d just take a seat and do the task.
It took 3 months for anyone there to realize I had even moved on from windows.
They all used Libreoffice and other pre installed software and our workflow literally did not change at all, if anything I spent less time fixing fucking windows.
Good riddance, I will NEVER go back to that horse shit. They don’t respect you and it’s on purpose.
My old W10 PC is now Linux as of last week. (Cachy OS, test rig)

My W11 PC… It will be Linux, Mint dual boot this weekend.
Now… my phone. You win this round Android, but GrapheneOS is clawing at the door. Google will foolishly stop support for my phone this October and the new phone will probably be… You guessed it… Linux.
I know Ubuntu allows you to try out the OS off of a USB before you do a full install. Do note that performance will probably take a hit since it’s running off a USB, but it usually works just fine for basic web browsing, writing a spreadsheet, etc.
I am going to be USB booting into Linux, to try and recover data off a failing drive, from a Syneology NAS.
It will be my first toe dip.
Meanwhile, Linux works just fine. Booted up, opened steam, played Elden Ring (today I learned you can parry Midra!). Worked on a spreadsheet for some personal finance. Did some coding. At no point did I see an ad or fight with the UI.
Start and right click also just works instantly as it should on fucking massive powerful machines doing what should be a absolute trivial thing.
I’m still new enough on my Linux install to get excited every time I can get a free open source program/app/flatpacK ext… to do some “thing” that Windows had a jank ass “free with adds / limited use” crap program that I had to down load from a sketchy webpage hidden between click bait links to malware.
I also like to go check the blocked sites on my pihole (DCHP) light up like a Christmas tree when I boot into windows, vs mostly green safe net traffic on my Linux boot.
It’s so much worse. Right click, nothing happens. Right click again, shitty incomplete menu opens. Click more options. Menu closes, nothing happens. Right click a third time, click more options. Fucking finally, an actual menu opens. Click rename. Menu closes nothing happens. Do it all a fourth time, finally works.
Use any version of Linux, works first time.
Or just press the file and hit F2, or slow click on the file twice.
You simply don’t click rename.
You press F2.
Yes that was mostly poking fun. Use Linux if you want to stay sane with reliable behavior.
I really hate how F2 will mute the speakers or something on half the machines I touch. I want to shoot whoever decided that a key’s primary function requires modifier key.
Most modern ones have an fnlock somehow (fn+escape typically). Set it and forget it.
My real annoyance is that I have an airmouse+keyboard thing for my Pi that doesn’t have function keys at all. Dude, why?
I’ve changed the Fn key to be off by default in BIOS.
The problem is that I jump on a lot of other people’s PCs, and it’s wildly different every time. Half the time I’m using someone else’s PC, it’s to fix something, and I’m dancing all over the hotkeys to refresh stuff, rename files, take screenshots and open system dialogs.
The good ones let you choose. The sad thing is that I am absolutely not entirely sure which mapping is best. It is handy to have display and keyboard lighting hot keys there.
