So every once in a while I forget to bring my cane when I go out on my bike.

I bought a cane to keep on my bike today. Now I won’t forget a cane when I’m going out for brunch or whatever and haven’t had my coffee yet.

It’s dark blue.

Does it have a sword in the hilt?

If I have to use a cane, I’d better get a goddamn sword to make up for it.

nah, i don’t have a sword cane. they are heavy. I have 4 canes with specific purposes. One’s a cool wooden wizard cane for hiking, one’s got an octopus handle, one is very lightweight, and one is collapsible and lives in the car. I should really get a fifth to live at band practice but I want to use my octopus cane there. I will do a canepost after the festival

I just hung mine back in the closet yesterday. And hopefully I won’t need it again for another 4 or 5 years.

      Congratulations! That’s a great feeling.

When I was giving my dad the “you need a cane” talk, I realized most of the reasons applied to me too and so I went out and got a cane before he did. It gave me time to put “fancy looking canes” in the budget and I kind of like walking around with the squid handle one, you know?

As much as I hate my cane and what it represents to me, I hate using crutches and walkers even more. I’ve had to use both of these over the last years also.

As much as I hate my cane and what it represents to me

it took getting a recumbent trike for me to see it differently and i really wish I had switched my brain earlier. I (similarly to you) saw my cane as visible evidence of my disability, but now i see it as something that helps me get out more. I mean I still see it the first way too, but it does not seem as bad, you know?

What I hate is the cane prevents me from going out into the places where the wild things are. It will end my ability to forage wild mushrooms and berries in the clear cuts. Nor hunt the ruffed grouse in the aspen thickets in the forests I live in or chase pheasants across the prairies with my dogs. No more climbing ladders to fix my home or do a brake job on my car.

Every time I need that cane, it limits my freedom and the things I can do. I do not suffer limitations very well.

I don’t strictly need something but I like having a staff. I have a dog and squatting to get the poop its so nice to have something to pull yourself up with.

I have like 3 extras I’m not going to use in the next five years. You have a post office box I could mail a couple to?

Shit, you’d be the second person in 2 weeks asking if I have a post box.

I don’t, but its starting to sound like I should lol.

New cane day is nice, if not as nice as new knife day. Or new insert hobby item day by virtue of canes being an unpleasant necessity most of the time.

I don’t have a lot of them. But I also tend to carefully select mine. My main is a cane masters basic version. A handful of folding aluminum ones (including the backup one in the car). One that’s more of a walking stick than a cane by virtue of a head that’s impractical for bearing weight (lumpy skull). Two sword canes; one that’s cheap and decorative, the other useable.

I need to save up and snag a backup cane masters one, but they’ve stopped selling that model, and what they still sell tends to be more aggressive looking, and I prefer something less questionable for the rare visit to places that are restrictive. They’re fairly over priced as well, but there aren’t many companies making canes are the dimensions and handles I prefer, so I’m stuck

Hope your new one gives you many miles :)
