Oliver already basically does. Stewart is a die-hard neoliberal and it drives me crazy people don’t see it.

      I wouldn’t call him “die-hard”. He’s a neoliberal, but I think he’s clearly pretty conflicted.

He seems like a closet Berniecrat. He hasn’t said it, but I think he is probably a Warren voter.

I wish he was more socialist, but it’s clear that he hates Jefferies and Schumer, and has a sinking suspicion that Democrats are just the Washington Generals, but is still in the denial phase.

I listen to his podcast, and it’s mostly good. He’s still a lib, but he’s clearly working on it. It especially comes out when he’s taking with his producers, who he clearly hired to help him see his blind spots.

      I like him.

I couldn’t have said it better myself. I think Stewart has a positive effect on politics overall, even if he does drive me nuts occasionally. People shouldn’t put him on a pedestal, but similarly they shouldn’t call him full neoliberal.

        Shit’s nuanced.

Oliver practices criticism that could align with anticapitalism, but I have not heard him actually properly criticize the capitalist mode of production. He strikes me as more of a social democrat

No no no. Here’s what we do.

Step 1: have them on as guests for The Late Show with Steven Colbert.

Step 2: They should kiss. Like…a lot.

There is no step 3. It might be true that we’re trying to accomplish different things.

Or maybe just John Oliver - if he can promote turning off privacy settings for Meta apps under a “johnoliverwantsyourraterotica” domain, he can promote socialism without using socialism and also under cover of rat erotica.

they already serve their purpose: making leftists realize they’re leftists by watching liberals do the same goddamn shit

you start watching Jon Stewart as a progressive and end up a dem soc by the end of the year. fast forward a bit and you’ve shed capitalism entirely, having always realized something was fundamentally wrong but never having the right language for it.

Not really. There’s progressive principle in there but I think they’re just “one of the good ones” liberals.

Of course, I haven’t watched them in a while so, maybe they’ve changed?
