Not the person you replied to, but I have thoughts on this point in particular:

1. Consumer devices have started to slow down their performance improvements because we’re bumping up against the limits of physics
2. People/corporations with way more money than the average consumer will always be able to run something orders of magnitude more powerful. Any advances that improve things for the average consumer will improve things for rich people/corporations even more.
3. Training an LLM isn’t really even about compute speed, it’s about access to good training material. The average consumer can’t afford to buy (or pirate) every book in existence like a rich person/corporation can. An average person doesn’t have the ability or time to curate their own training data, but rich people/corporations do.

Then why did you bring up utilities

Where’s your line between “keeping the government out of your personal choices” vs. “regulations that keep us safe”? Like, I’m sure you’re ok with regulations that keep poisons like lead, arsenic, etc. out of consumable goods, right?

I kinda agree with the other commenter that said all drugs should be legalized, but also, I’ve had close personal experiences with how addictive and harmful nicotine is, so I can also understand why it would be the target of bans.

The death threats were shitty, I agree. But they were at least partially fueled by the fact that we have lawmakers trying to make it illegal to use an operating system that doesn’t ask for your age. If that systemd change was introduced in a different time, I doubt people would have even noticed or cared.

Not trying to excuse the death threats, because again, that’s shitty, there’s no reason to do that. I think it’s important to understand the context and nuance around all that though.

I think it’s more just that expectations are much higher for a AAA studio like Bethesda. They built so much hype and asked for nearly $100 at launch for a game that didn’t live up. There’s plenty of meh games out there, they’re just priced accordingly. There’s also a ton of really great games out there priced way lower than what AAA studios are asking. I think it’s very fair to hold those studios to a standard that reflects the prices they’re charging.
