Japan has a very homogeneous population, so xenophobia and racism are quasi indistinguishable.

This is exactly the reason why collecting data about race and religion of people is illegal in France since WWII.
That was not a problem when people wrote in cursive. I think this flaw is to be blamed on the printing press.
