  • It’s not.

You have an account on a server (instance). That server has an administrator. I have an account on a different server, which has a different administrator. We can speak to each other in the middle from these two separate servers, via federation protocols.

The administrator(s) on your server are loud and proud authoritarians and frequently silence any discussion of general resistance, among other topics that they don’t like. This is not a personal failure on your part; there’s not much way to know about it except to be told or to inspect the mod logs yourself. Now that you’ve been told, though, you have the opportunity to move to a server that actually respects your right to speak on the internet.

Or you may elect to stay on LW and be banned or censored without warning, and be lightly associated with auth-left idiots for anyone who knows what the LW admins are like. That is a choice that can be made.

If you are going to make a move, I’ll warn you that .ml is known for similar. Just about most anywhere else is hosted by sane people, frequently as independent projects, even more frequently as a direct response to LW and ML’s dumbfuckery.

  • Unironically, yes. The brain is really weird about a lot of shit. It’s not that difficult to make it believe something if you’re committed.

I got involved in this around a decade ago learning a bunch of “brain hacking” stuff. Can confirm, it is real. Can’t say it’s something I’d recommend to the average person, though. It’s a fast track to some major instability if you aren’t used to playing around with your own thought processes in detail.

  • Because he doesn’t know any better. He is, truly and actually, one of the dumbest motherfuckers to ever failson his way into a position of power, and this is backed up by testimony of his teachers.

An 8 year old child, or even ChatGPT, can reliably predict his actions in advance because he really is actually that simple. He has specific reactions to specific stimuli that can always be gamed because they’re always the same. Guy operates like one of the ghosts in Pac-Man. If you know how his actions are wired you can lead him by the nose down whatever path you want.

His investors and handlers know this and use it to push their agendas. Everyone else makes the mistake of trying to speak at him like he’s a sapient creature, and that fails to get results because he doesn’t operate like a sapient creature does.

  • HORUS is by a long shot my favorite LANCER manufacturer. In a world of mega-corporations and mercenaries, I like to throw my lot in with the anarchist collective that likes to play with space ghosts.

But yeah, definitely. It barely matters. As an engineer of some renown once said,

"For instance, how am I gonna stop some big mean Mother-Hubbard from tearin’ me a structurally superfluous new behind?

    The answer? Use a gun.

And if that don’t work, use more gun."

And there isn’t a lot of “more gun” you can do than staring down the many, many barrels of a Raleigh or Monarch unit.

  • I fucking love LANCER. In most settings, you get your hands on a literal infohazard and most people would (quite rightly) probably try to keep that under wraps. Oh, we’ve discovered an AI that wrote itself, that can invert its cameras and blast you with a holy fractal pattern that will permanently blind organics and can straight up kill you right through the cockpit of your mech without any physical damage. In a sane world we park this thing in cold storage and hope nobody finds it for the next millennium.

In LANCER? HORUS got their hands on this, and their response was “overclock it, and point it that direction”, and the result is the Gorgon, one of the most dangerous and badass ‘support’ units in the setting. AI copilot programs have to put a big fuckin’ censor bar over Gorgon units in the field, so their pilot doesn’t just straight up die by catching it in their peripheral vision. An extruded Basilisk unit on a Gorgon can stop a pilot dead in their tracks with a full mental stun even through the NHP-filtering censor, it just shuts your entire brain down. The Basilisk pattern is akin to looking God right in the eyes, it’ll burn out your neurons if unprotected and it’ll turn you into a drooling mess for a minute or two even when suitably protected.

And this is a defensive unit!
