It’s more that the news used to be funded in part (or whole) by advertising. Basically a newspaper was an ad delivery mechanism, with the news part being there only to get you to look at ads. Without that, news is unaffordable for most, so you end up with people just disconnecting.

I don’t regard a registration requirement from a very tiny source to be a problem.
