History Memes@piefed.social•how dare a woman physician treat womenEnglish
43·20 days agoAgnodice is not generally considered a historical figure, but her legend has influenced discussions about gender roles in medical professions.
And then speaks to one girl and promptly falls in love with her.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Does your hobby have a "random person in Nebraska" project? If so, what is it?
1·24 days agoThere seem to be very few people who are willing and able to properly organise large-scale re-enactment events. In my country, like half of the scene is dependant on one guy who more-or-less makes a living of organising events.

History Memes@piefed.social•Sorry Asterix and Obelix fans, but that little village in Gaul is going DOWNEnglish
13·27 days agoI’m starting to feel that a lot of people who are obsessed with ancient Rome have a rather naïve concept of history which is completely focused on Great Men and Great Battles. While politics and warfare certainly are fun to study, this leads to a very limited view of the past (and bullshit like “Hard times create strong men…”), and personally I find it a rather boring way to interact with history.
(I do realise there are more ways to study the classical world; I’m a great fan of Jona Lendering’s blog (Dutch)).
During my study I’ve grown to love Early Modern Europe because of the massive developments in state politics and diplomacy, warfare, global exploration and religion. There’s so much happening at once and it’s really complex, but there’s enough source material to study it properly.
Also, for people who like reading about ordinary people in the past, the Middle Ages can be really rewarding. Medieval people were a lot like us (more so than say Victorians) but also very different in really interesting ways. And they built a lot of awesome stuff.

PC Master Race@lemmy.world•Lenovo LOQ 15AHP10 I just purchased for my son. Bought new in Australia and paid $1500English
2·30 days agoI think you made a good choice. I recently bought a Lenovo LOQ 17IRX10 at MSRP and I’m very happy with it. Before this I used a Lenovo Legion 5 17ITH6 for four years, and I only replaced it because Windows 10 is going EOL and I didn´t want to bother with switching to Linux on a dualboot.
I booted into Windows 11 a few times to check whether everything was working well, and that really cemented my decision to just wipe the whole thing and install Linux Mint. It was slow and cumbersome and I kept getting ads from either Microsoft or some preinstalled software. Switching to Linux didn´t go as smoothly as people sometimes suggested it would (but that’s probably because I wanted to create a very specific setup), but now everything works very fast and it’s just really nice and quiet.

2·30 days agoI just bought a LOQ and put Linux Mint on it. It’s a much more pleasant experience than the few times I booted into Windows 11.

61·2 months agoAlcohol is the Great Social Lubricant. There a lots of activities that allow for some responsible drinking while having fun with friends or new people, like student associations, sport teams, Renaissance fairs, concerts, house parties, etc. Just get a drink and go talk to people. You’ll probably do some stupid stuff as well, but at least that makes for good stories.
Don’t worry about it too much. Everyone is fucked up in their own way. At least you seem to be having fun.
Well, I’m sure a lot of people love violet’s mom

6·2 months agoAnytime I see someone posting political stuff in non-political communities, I check their post history. Almost without fail they’re only posting political content, so I’ll block them. If I want politics, I’ll read the newspaper.

Same. I used to watch Futurama a lot and I usually found it amusing, but I never made any audible noises of enjoyment.
