I quit smoking July 19, 2026 and drinking Feb 14, 2017. My opinion is addictive habits aren’t going anywhere. That the struggles over addiction of past generations will mirror the struggles of future generations.

With that said, I think some things are changing:

• smoking is pretty stigmatized in more cultures
• drunkenness is unglamorous and may be posted to social media
• MH occupies more space in the public consciousness

Most importantly, it’s profitable to sell addiction. As long as that’s not changing, and it doesn’t seem to be, we we always bear this burden.

I try to maintain a habit of starting. Finishing a task is obv a noble goal and building the habiting of starting helps me get there.

Spam is as old as the internet. I think a public service with zero moderation is going to have spam without moderation.

I’m not defending Nazis and I think you can see that. My take is that its harmful to label and then use that label to dehumanize a group of people. That type of behavior brings a witch hunt in the best case and genocide in the worst.

Were some people “objectively” witches during the Salem witch hunts? Were others “objectively” communist during the Red Scare? Many victims of the holocaust were objectively Jews.

I can see where you’re coming from and understand why you feel that way: bigotry damages the world. We don’t have to agree that calling people Nazis dehumanizes them and that dehumanizing people is harmful, that’s fine. Peace be with you.

Are you saying that when you call someone a Nazi, you’re describing a demographic group for descriptive purposes? And that you’re not saying it with any malice?

Stalin’s USSR used the label Vrag Naroda to dehumanize people resulting in the tragedy at Kolyma. You may feel like you’re doing the right thing by labeling people Nazis or an enemy.

Josef Stalin thought he was doing the right thing. So did Hitler.

I’m not defending the actions of the President of the United States, his supporters (or opponents!). I’m saying that using these tactics is harmful.

“Nazi” is another good example of a label that creates “the other.” Words like this are often used by groups to dehumanize people. A good example of this is the use of “Untermenschen” by the German National Socialist party of the 1930s and 1940s. By labeling groups of people Untermenschen, the National Socialists were able to pave the way for the exclusion from society and eventual extermination of several groups of people.

In the US, an obvious parallel is the labelling of people “illegal immigrants.”

There is no use of these labels other than immediate division and eventual dehumanization, so I don’t use em. You’re obv free to carry yourself as you please.

Labels like “woke,” “maga,” “liberal,” “democrat,” “republican,” etc are in themselves invitations for self-identification or pejorative labels to create the illusion of “the other.”

We don’t have to think or identify with these words.

We can be ourselves and identify with our children, family, friends, and neighbors: the things that are actually important.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve got more responsibilities which compete for my care and attention. With that said, I make time. What that looks like for me is I visit with one of my old friends quarterly-ish and then go fishing or hunting (depending on season) once every other week with a closer friend.

Then for sharing things on the emotional front, in my experience that may come as a natural consequence of sharing other things going on in your life and asking about another’s own experiences.

Yeah, maybe something like that. I switched to Posteo (from Proton, which didn’t have IMAP back then, and that from Gmail) like a decade ago. And something that I appreciate about it is that I’ve developed a practice/ habit of archiving or deleting old emails.

I save important photos, documents etc to my local disk and then delete the email. For context, I have 70 messages in my inbox.

Like I said above, the way I think about it is they don’t want the cost of guaranteeing additional storage, but it’s just a guess. If you were to send them an email and ask (I’ve sent a couple over the years, they respond to email), I’d be curious what their public response is.

Does Posteo do a bunch of stuff that warrants a high rate for the higher end compared to the very affordable low end?

Posteo offers IMAP, CalDav, and CardDav. (Those were the features which sold me.) I think Tuta, and Proton don’t offer IMAP and none of them offer any WebDAV.

But does that relate to their storage pricing? Hard to say. Usually when I see things that are priced higher than what appears to be market rate, I understand that to mean the service provider doesn’t really want to do the thing. (Guaranteeing the availability of lots of GBs of storage for many users)

Yeah, from my POV that’s a feature. If a process modifies your photo, its no longer your photo and shouldn’t be able to masquerade as your photo.

Obv, integrating GPG w OpenCamera is just an example. GPG could be integrated w social media apps so that after you select “share,” and the image is processed, that modified image is signed before upload.
