Linux@lemmy.ml•Framework announced the Framework 13 Pro with full Linux compatibility from the StartEnglish
2·2 months agoFrom my experience trying to find retrofit displays for my ThinkPad P14s Gen 5, there’s two routes Framework probably could go down for this.
An OLED would be the best display option, and is somewhat more available. However, it requires extra voltage circuitry in order to work compared to an LCD, so there would probably need to be a mainboard revision to accommodate this, making it quite unlikely as it locks out users of existing systems (Unless they have some sort of adapter? No idea how that would work but maybe something could be done).
Alternatively, I have seen that there are Mini LED displays with the same connector (40 pin 4 lane eDP) and voltages that can work as a direct replacement, although without the per pixel backlight advantage of OLED. However there appears to be very few panels available in this configuration, probably raising the price a bit, especially since I can’t find any in the 13.5 inch size of the Framework 13. Considering this Pro version has a custom manufactured display though, they could probably source one eventually and sell it as an upgrade.

251·2 months agoThis is quite an impressive launch from Framework. Even with the high RAM and storage prices, it is still cost competitive with an equivalent MacBook Pro (my yardstick for mid-high end laptops), but with a fully open design you can run Linux on without any virtual machines, and with (claimed) nearly equal battery life. I am somewhat disappointed though by that display, in my opinion touch is not as worthwhile compared to a display with local dimming (OLED/Mini LED).

2·2 months agoFor some reason Lemmy is weirdly buggy when it comes to animated WEBP files, so you may need to click on the image or otherwise access the image URL, since then the browser can render it correctly.

Nintendo@lemmy.world•Tips for people using 3DS Sound in 2026English
0·3 months agoTo the best of my knowledge, most of the CD rippers back in the day used the Fraunhofer codec or in the case of iTunes its own encoder, so I guess this only really became an issue once FLAC sources became somewhat commonplace. In addition, the encoders used on a decent number of music download sites (most notably Sony’s Mora) seem to work fine on the 3DS, bar the long loading time with the images, so I guess Nintendo never felt the need to make it work with other encoders. Knowing them though, there’s probably some horrible spaghetti code behind the scenes causing this.

0·3 months agoJust did some more trials and the Fraunhofer AAC codec works. Check the update in the post for details, but the TL:DR is to either use fre:ac’s Flatpak (which includes the encoder) or find a version of FFmpeg for your distro that includes the encoder.
The old Dysons are way better than whatever the hell they’re doing nowadays. I could genuinely feel the difference in the plastic quality when I moved from an older DC 39 to a newer Big Ball (the Big Ball’s is significantly worse). Not to mention the Big Ball has gone through two roller heads (both had the mechanism break). No wonder their newer cordless models have a 2 year warranty instead of the old corded 5 year. They used to be really good, if a bit expensive, but now the options from Bosch and Miele look far more attractive.

1·5 months agoIt was so off putting when you just wanted to share something and proceeded to get struck down by the wrath of the mods, or worse, the completely opaque auto filtering CQS system. As you can probably tell from my profile, I love making memes, but only really had the courage to start when I joined Lemmy, since if I made a bad one here it would just get downvoted and I would have a chance. This place is such a breath of fresh air.

The US title is way cooler than the European one I played, StreetPass Battle doesn’t have the same ring to it.
