World News@lemmy.world•Singaporean man executed for importing cannabisEnglish
3·10 days agoI think they were referring to Chia Thye Poh and various other crackdowns of “commie scum” boogiemen. Its worth noting Singapore only became a country in the 60s.
As a result, and without ever facing indictment or criminal trial, he became one of the longest-serving political prisoners in the world. Restrictions on his civil rights remained in force for more than 32 years following his arrest, and the duration of his detention was often compared to that of Nelson Mandela, who spent over 27 years in prison following his conviction for treason, sabotage and other political crimes.[1]
(NCMPs kinda sorta address the issue of a single party system. Feels more like a bandaid at best and controlled opposition at worst)

World News@lemmy.world•Singaporean man executed for importing cannabisEnglish
8·10 days agoSingapore is small and the government is heavy handed in anything drug related. A “massive” anti drug sweep netted less cannabis than the smuggler in this post had.
https://www.mha.gov.sg/media-room/publications/compilation-of-drug-related-studies-and-surveys/
Based on the survey findings, it is estimated that about 0.7% of Singapore residents had consumed an illicit drug at least once in the last 12 months.

This is what the paper disimberkment form used to look like before they switched to an electronic version. I think the electronic version says something similar.

politics @lemmy.world•Trump signs order directing creation of a national voter list, a move sure to face legal challenges
0·30 days agoThe elephant in the room is him ordering the postal service not to deliver ballots from people not on the federal approved voter list. The postal service isn’t state ran. Trump doesn’t have direct control over who the post master is, but the board that selects the post master is mostly empty seats so I guess he could flood it with sycophants with support from congress and appoint a new post master if this one puts up any resistance.
It also seeks to bar the U.S. Postal Service from sending absentee ballots to those not on each state’s approved list.
Legal experts noted other potential flaws with the order. David Becker, a former Justice Department lawyer who leads the Center for Election Innovation and Research, said the Postal Service is run by a board of governors [not state governors] and the president has no power to tell it what mail it can and cannot deliver.
A spokesperson for USPS said Tuesday the agency will review the order. Trump has sought to bring the independent agency under more presidential control, proposing to fold it under the Commerce Department — whose secretary, Howard Lutnick, was on hand for Tuesday’s signing.
