World News@lemmy.world•WHO to hold emergency committee meeting as Ebola death toll rises to 131English
1·7 hours agoThank you for the level-headed and informed response!
Yes, the DRC is definitely less stable than the West African countries affected a decade ago. I know China and parts of Europe have provided aid since the last Ebola epidemic, I’m hoping that aid ramps up to contain this one.

World News@lemmy.world•Israeli minister orders West Bank hamlet evicted after hearing he may face arrest warrant overseasEnglish

This is what limp-dick “penalties” against Nazis leads to.
Did I miss something about Zohran?

World News@lemmy.world•WHO to hold emergency committee meeting as Ebola death toll rises to 131English
131·1 day agoI remember when Ebola seemed to be some incurable disease for years until it started spreading to Europe and the US in 2014/2016. All of sudden the Global North found a few cures and sent crates of it to the affected Global South. I’m hoping that support will be provided earlier rather than later this time.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Israeli group sues Canadian human rights museum over 'Nakba' exhibit
11·2 days agoI think it’s more about draining the resources of a museum with costly litigation, which is the typical MO.
One of the most prominent witnesses in the ICC Genocide case against Israel is a British Palestinian doctor who only recently won a 2 year long litigation battle against “UK lawyers for Israel” in January, which UKLFI is trying to reopen again this past March - each legal battle costs him about £150,000, not to mention time and money from his actual job of being a doctor.

They prefer to manage their own apps - a signal desktop app being one of them.

2·3 days agoTrue, until VPNs are also banned (like some US states are doing). One anti-privacy law passed will bring up another, then another, then another.

World News@lemmy.world•Ultranationalist Jews chant racist slogans during annual march into Jerusalem's Old CityEnglish
5·5 days agoThe procession often leads to violent confrontations between ultranationalists and Palestinian residents
So lynchings and group beatings are downplayed as “confrontations”.
The article also mentions that it’s “young” people to try and excuse it, but then goes on to mention that fuckface Ben Gvir was in attendance earlier in the day.
To add a little bit of insider context to AP News that is supposed to be one of the journals of record - the past few years they’ve fired anyone that was critical of Israel to maintain their “neutrality” but there were no changes to their editor board who are bias towards Israel.

World News@lemmy.world•Iran demands Pride flags be banned from World Cup stadiumsEnglish
10·6 days agoClickbait title with the article jumping to conclusion
Among a list of demands made by the Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran is that only officially recognized national flags should be displayed during the team’s games, extending to those flags carried by fans in the stands.
If you click on another article about the “Pride Match”, it talks about how poorly ticket sales are - seems that FIFA (and sports news outlets reliant on FIFA) want to drum up ‘hubbub’.
World Cup Pride Match tickets still available as final sales phase opens
There were plenty of tickets available for the World Cup‘s first-ever designated Pride Match when FIFA’s “last-minute sales phase” began Wednesday.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Canada expands sanctions against Russia over abduction of Ukrainian children
2·7 days agoSure, I agree with that rephrasing. If your only measure is whether violence would break out, then sure. Russia is more likely to go to war with Canada over the arctic territores than Israel.
But considering that the reports put Israel high up there with external interference, then, yes, i wouldn’t use “friendly” terminology with a genocidal supremacist state that supports rightwing politicians in our neighboring country during elections. Definitely more detrimental than a bunch of hick truckers not liking masks.

World News@lemmy.world•Fiber-optic drones, the weapon Hezbollah has adopted to attack Israel: ‘Using them is easier than playing a video game’English
1·7 days agoI’m just entering this whole thread just now.
Like, sure, I’ll agree that Hezbollah have definitely not been a net benefit to Lebanese and they’ve used the resistance rhetoric to kill and assassinate Lebanese (civilian and politician alike).
But I can’t say that they’ve ever been the aggressor against Israel. Even if you look at the 2006 war that ‘started’ with Hezbollah kidnapping Israeli soldiers patrolling the border, they did it with the purpose of negotiating the release of hostages that Israel held and tortured for many years after their withdrawal from their occupation of South Lebanon.
And to also try and compare glorified bottle rockets to the ultimately destructive bunker busters lined with uranium that Israel launches at civilian infrastructure in a non symmetrically proportionate response - it’s not a 1:1 comparison and that needs to be highlighted and underscored.

4·7 days agoTo use your argument, it’s not an “either” argument of “more of an ally”. Israel is not an ally to Canada and never was - let’s not excuse or normalize double standards.
Canadian security agencies literally flag it as 1 of 6 countries (amongst Russia, China, India) trying to meddle in Canadian affairs and push disinformation.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Canada Building EV Data Protection Rules Amid Chinese Car Surveillance Fears
26·9 days agoIt’s funny how once China is involved, the Government all of a sudden cares about consumer privacy and data protection.
All modern vehicles collect a ton of telemetry through their telemetry units and these companies are being advised by consulting groups to monetize the data.
Hell! Even Israeli intelligence is hacking into these telemetry units because their security is piss poor
But, yeah, now it’s a problem when China might have a backdoor.

I’m sorry, this is focusing on one thing rather than the whole.
It’s not just about military spending, it’s the fact that the neoliberal policies are effecting everything from food, to housing, to social safety nets, to etc.
If taxes were raised on companies or high earners, or on unrealized capital gains, etc… then I’m sure there would be more money in government coffers.
Instead, we’re told that the average Canadian has to tighten their belts and pay taxes because of saber rattling while the rich continue unaffected at worst, and at best are raking in piles of money through the government contracts (Carney’s “sovereign wealth fund”).
Poland, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, etc… you’re assuming that the average citizen isn’t annoyed about the expenditure either, or that Germany and Sweden don’t rely on the MID for their economy, or also that their healthcare, housing, cost of living, etc. isn’t better than ours.
Meanwhile 1 in 4 Canadians are going hungry and are asked to foot the bill. Instead of food, we’re going to be handed an enlistment pamphlet.
