  • A space can be safe for cisgender, white feminists without being a safe space for trans women, women of color, working class women, disabled women, etc. Intersectionality is a big part of what makes ‘general’ spaces for women actually only safe or accessible for women who fit a narrow ideal of Western womanhood.

Like, ideally a feminist space would account for this, but ask a black feminist if they’re safe and welcome in every feminist space and they will probably tell you no, because many spaces center the concerns of cisgender, white, otherwise privileged women.

The problem is that this is not a private community, lemmy and piefed are fundamentally public spaces, not private, it is impossible and unreasonable to have a private community.

As of 1.6 Piefed does support ‘private’ (non-federating) communities that only people with certain assigned roles can invite others to: https://codeberg.org/rimu/pyfedi/releases/tag/v1.6.0

The mods of the community have the idea that it’s everyone else’s problem, that tens of thousands of people should go out of their way to remedy the issue by blocking the community just so a couple hundred (thousand?) people can have no responsibility for it.

I think it’s kind of wild to expect a community to be open to everyone or not exist at all on the fediverse, along with the idea that this is a huge burden on anyone except the mods of that community who have to clean up the comment section.

  • Community college is insanely affordable where I live, like $600/semester for a full class load before financial aid. Lots of textbook free classes too that use open source books. And colleges have financial aid offices with people whose only job is to figure out what aid you qualify for.

There’s a lot of help to go back to college, you just need to ask for it.
