I think it’s more that given most scenarios that require a doomsday bunker would result in the collapse of society, you’d probably not live long enough for gold to have close to its current value again. I’m reminded of a movie quote “these are desert people, they value water not gold”. After reading The Road again recently, I have a hard time picturing most people, a majority of which are emaciated and struggling each day to find food survive, caring about or walking around with heavy metal bars.
So while no one dispute gold being precious or having value, it’s more that the value system of society in such a scenario would be drastically different. Plus, you emerge from a bunker into the new, hardened world and try to buy people with gold, it’d probably go the route of the security detail I mentioned. Who’s going to serve as security for people that likely won’t have food left to offer, will have a target on their back for who they were and probably aren’t going to share their extravagant shelter with you?

Gold would have 0 value, so that’s not an option either
I agree that it has little intrinsic value, but unless all of history and culture was erased I think it would still be regarded as a store of value.
I would think actual useful survival things are worth far more. What would you rather have after doomsday or whatever, a tonne of gold, or a lighter?
I mean, weird to keep arguing after I said I agreed for my own part. But I recognise others don’t think as we do.

I would prefer to agree with you, but humans in dire straits too rarely make smart long-term choices.
Definitely a fair point. Either way, hopefully we as a species never get any firm evidence to answer either way.
