Marco Rubio is on resignation watch from both sides of the Atlantic in the expectation he will quit to launch a bid to be the next US president, The Independent can reveal.

Insiders say the US secretary of state and White House national security adviser is preparing for the race to be the Republican nominee in November 2028, with JD Vance currently his main rival.

Even before the disastrous midterm results – resulting in the Republicans losing control of both the House and the Senate – senior party sources in the US and senior figures in the UK government told The Independent that Mr Rubio could quit his senior role in Donald Trump’s administration.

The sources doubled down on that expectation, after the midterms gave a damning indictment of the Trump presidency, with the Democrats seizing Republican strongholds such as Kansas and Texas.

Can’t wait for the mass wave of Republicans “I knew he was bad the whole time and never supported him” history rewrite 🙂

Been hearing that for damn near a fucking decade.

Just resignation? If he wants any redemption, he’ll need to go much further than that.

Conservatives are biologically unable to experience shame, so we know he will never do the right thing and get off our planet.

Trump apparently gives people shoes in the size he THINKS they are, and throws a tantrum if they’re not wearing them. Gifts in this style are a common narcissist power play.

Seems like it wouldn’t be hard to exchange them or just buy a pair in the same brand that fits, but I’m glad it doesn’t occur to them.

This is true, but it’s also part of the power play - “what if I exchange them and he notices they’re not the size he bought, will that be enough for him to replace me”.

The full story of the two failed terms of donnie are going to need to have many pages to really give it the proper attention it needs.

The shit he’s been doing (so far) in this second term has just been so wild. I mean, buying shoes for other men, what even the fuck.

And now he’s going bonkers over the badonkadonks of other men…

And then on the home stretch of the midterm campaigns, he goes out to the reflecting pool and starts bragging about something that he so obviously fucked up.

I can explain the ass talk. Trump always tries to be cute near election time so he appears less scary and gets media attention. Like in 2020 when he did the YMCA fist pumps (which is gay coded btw) or in 2024 when he went to McDonalds or now when he AND JD were saying a bunch of gay shit.

I kinda don’t understand this one.

Rubio hasn’t been directly involved with the worse disaster, Iran, and was seemingly positioning himself to be Viceroy of South America and the Carribean, which certainly doesn’t bother Republicans. He is adhering to the traditional US policy of regime-change following the CIA playbook; he doesn’t have the staggering improvisational incompetence of Hegseth. He really hasn’t done anything “wrong” relative to the rest of this abberant administration; heck, he doesn’t even seem that pro-Israel and was the first public official to implicate Israel as the tail wagging the dog in Iran. Maybe that’s why they want to get rid of him?

To a Republican that just shows you’re a good businessman. Rick Scott committed the largest Medicare fraud in history, it was public knowledge, and then he got elected governor of Florida. Now he’s a senator. It’s like a precondition to run for office as a Republican you need to be a criminal

Agreed, but Hegseth was more directly in charge of those, (reportedly ordering a double-tap to kill survivors–civil suit coming to a court near you) and, again, this isn’t about Rule of Law but embarassing the regime–and killing civilans in SA is nothing out of the ordinary for the US.

lol they’re going to find someone to be the fall guy and they dont’ care who it is, or how justified. or even justified at all. it should be nauseatingly apparent by now that trump can point his geriatric finger at anyone and say “______ is his/her fault,” and now that person is the new RINO/traitor/satan, and it doesn’t matter what anyone says-- that person is done for

I don’t know who is going to be satisfied by this burnt offering.

Looking at it analytically: It’s probably republicans “best shot” at keeping 2028 but I think everyone on that party and admin know it’s a lame duck + uphill battle. Don’t waste a promising candidate now. Rebuild and come back later.

My personal opinion is this is awesome. If Rubio is the best they can do we’re in for another blue bloodbath. It’s also an indictment on how much everyone is done with this shit.

How in the world has Rubio been “the only adult in the room”? You cannot be for real right now.

I guess y’all are already trying to launder his image? Are those the new marching orders? Launder Rubio’s name and try to distance him from the literal war crimes that he ordered and/or oversaw?

I remember when all the “serious” pundits in the Murc’s Law media were insistent Jeb was gonna win the 2016 primaries…and then the completely unqualified and inexperienced donnie won, so who the fuck knows who the absolutely brainless among us will end up choosing for their R candidate…I mean, at least Marco has experience and he’s not nearly as stupid as donnie. He’s a total neocon so the people on the right that supposedly profess to be against wars are going to have to square that circle.

Not that the right wing are even the least bit coherent, beyond coddling the rich and racism, xenophobia, misogyny, etc.

He’s one of the few “defeat realists” regarding Iran war, and only reliable 2nd vote for 25th amendment. Impossible to get a Zionazi crony to be the next consecutive Zionazxi secretary of state approved by Senate. But its good for Cuba/Venezuela, which seems like his only job.
