  • They’re absolutely right about the packaging for many distros needing work - I’ve been using sudo-rs as a replacement for sudo on arch for a long time now and it’s been great, except for the install. Installing this and removing the original sudo was a pain in the ass and requires installing the original sudo first to get the default configs. If this changed, I think a lot more people would try it and adoption would benefit a lot.

  • I don’t like small talk and avoid it with people who know me already, but if I’m masking and talking to a stranger I try to replace it with another meaningless question that’s less personal.

What question I end up going for is pretty context dependent, like if someone just arrived somewhere then “get here okay?” or similar questions about their transit are an easy replacement that’s a lot less invasive imo.
If the person has made any conscious fashion choices I notice and like that’s another easy one, though ‘conscious choice’ is key (“I like your hair” or “nice stickers on your water bottle” are good, but “you have nice skin” is serial killer vibes imo).

Finding alternatives requires a tiny bit of thought each time, but imo that’s what communicating with another person should need.

  • One value that really shapes most of my other beliefs is that my moral system should be internally consistent. It’s caused me to try to consciously rethink all of my beliefs and values, and discard or refine any that are inconsistent and add others that were missing.

I don’t really think I’ll ever get to a point of all my beliefs being conscious ones and all my values being objective, that’s not really my aim (or even realistic imo), but it’s changed a lot about how I act and view right and wrong and it’s a process I don’t plan on ever stopping.

  • Idk how relevant this is given you’re on .world, the largest instance, but when an existing community that nobody on your instance is subscribed to gets its first sub on your instance, all the existing posts get pulled in and show at once in the feed. On a comparatively smaller instance like mine, I definitely notice when someone local first subscribes to an existing comm if I’m browsing all - so it’s not always someone being inconsiderate, sometimes just a quirk of federation
