Using black-and-white film was common up until relatively recently, even when color film was available, because black-and-white film was cheaper. Also since most newspapers printed in black-and-white anyway, many journalists opted to simply take the original photos with black-and-white film.

I feel the same way, but it was taken by a newspaper photographer shooting in black and white.
